چکیده

A new order and family (Sandcolei formes: Sandcoleidae) is erected for the Middle Eocene genera Eobucco Feduccia and Martin 1976, Uintornis Marsh 1872, and Botauroides Shufeldt 1915 of Wyoming and three new genera, Sandcoleus, Anneavis, and Chascacocolius from the Lower Eocene of Wyoming. Sandcoleiforms were coly-like (Coliidae) in appearance, but they exhibited very different bill specializations. They were not closely related to any extant orders; nevertheless, they were probably closer to colies than to any other birds currently known.

A redescription of Lithornis vulturinus (Aves, Palaeognathae) from the Early Eocene Fur Formation of Denmark.

The extinct Lithornithidae include several genera and species of flying palaeognathous birds of controversial affinities known from the Early Paleogene of North America and Europe. An almost complete, articulated skeleton from the Early Eocene marine deposits of the Fur Formation (Denmark) was recently assigned to Lithornis vulturinus Owen, 1840. This study provides a detailed redescription and...

A new eocene Chascacocolius-like mousebird (Aves: Coliiformes) with a remarkable gaping adaptation

A skull of a new species of mousebird (Aves: Coliiformes) is described from the Middle Eocene of Messel in Germany. Chascacocolius cacicirostris n. sp. is the fifth coliiform species described from the Messel deposits, and a further example of the remarkable similarity between the early Eocene avifaunas of North America and Europe. As for its much smaller North American counterpart, C. oscitans...

“Terror Birds” (Phorusrhacidae) from the Eocene of Europe Imply Trans-Tethys Dispersal

BACKGROUND Phorusrhacidae was a clade including middle-sized to giant terrestrial carnivorous birds, known mainly from the Cenozoic of South America, but also occurring in the Plio-Pleistocene of North America and the Eocene of Africa. Previous reports of small phorusrhacids in the Paleogene of Europe have been dismissed as based on non-phorusrhacid material. METHODOLOGY we have re-examined s...

Appraisal of the entire mitochondrial genome for DNA barcoding in birds

DNA barcoding based on a standardized region of 648 base pairs of mitochondrial DNAsequences from Cytochrome C Oxidase 1 (COX1) is proposed for animal species identification.Recent studies suggested that DNA barcoding has been effective for identifying 94% of birdspecies. The proposed threshold of 10 times the average intraspecific variation could be used forthe identification and delimitation ...

Rapid diversification and dispersal during periods of global warming by plethodontid salamanders.

A phylogeny and timescale derived from analyses of multilocus nuclear DNA sequences for Holarctic genera of plethodontid salamanders reveal them to be an old radiation whose common ancestor diverged from sister taxa in the late Jurassic and underwent rapid diversification during the late Cretaceous. A North American origin of plethodontids was followed by a continental-wide diversification, not...
